The promise of weight loss surgery is very compelling.
And it’s easy to find information about the potential benefits. It’s harder to get objective, balanced information about what you can expect from surgery, what it will and won’t fix in your life, and what you can expect in the long term.
We are licensed therapists who specialize in treating patients who are considering, or who have had, weight loss surgery. Over and over, we have had clients come into our offices and say things like, “I didn’t know this could happen,” or, “I wish someone had told me…”
We’ve wished that there was a resource available to teach clients about all of the things we’ve learned about weight loss surgery in our combined 25 years of practice. For example,
Being fat does not make you a bad person.
Diets don’t work.
Fat bodies deserve good healthcare.
Informed consent is about giving patients all of the information they need about the possible risks and benefits of a medical treatment in order to understand the treatment and make a decision about whether or not it is right for them. We hope this website will help you understand your own motivations for seeking weight loss surgery and provide you with the information you need to develop realistic and accurate expectations for the procedure.
