Frequently Asked Questions
About our approach
About the website
Are you trying to talk me out of getting weight loss surgery?
Absolutely not. We know that the choice to get surgery, like any medical decision, is intensely personal. There’s no way that we could know what is or is not right for your body. Our purpose is to provide information and to empower you to connect to your own values, beliefs, and knowledge of self. We are not doctors and the content on this site is not a medical recommendation.
Why are you being so negative about surgery?
We’re aware that much on this website could be seen as “negative” or putting the focus on the downsides, negative side effects, or problems that occur with weight loss surgeries. In our experience, virtually everything on the internet about weight loss surgery is focused on the “successes” and possible positive outcomes from surgery. We wanted to create a place for people to get information about these surgeries that can be difficult to find because being able to give as full-informed consent as possible is very important.
Why do you use the word “fat” instead of “obese”?
Both owners of this website practice from a weight inclusive lens, meaning, we recognize that bodies of all shapes and sizes, particularly larger ones, are inherently worthy and do not need to be “fixed” by surgeries or diets. We believe that “O words” such as obesity, obese and obesogenic, etc., posit fat bodies as inherently unhealthy, which contributes to stigma against fat bodies. Therefore we prefer to use “fat”, “larger-bodied”, and “higher BMI” as more neutral and less stigmatizing descriptors of bigger bodies.
Who is paying for this website?
The owners Tricia and Lisa are paying for this website and for any assistance they get keeping the site updated.
Are you profiting from this website?
In a word: no. This website was not created to produce income for either of the site owners or anyone else, and there is no income being generated by the website.
